Welcome to Esperance

Sunset Jetty — Best Restaurant with a Casino Hall

We opened Sunset Jetty Rooms on Dempster Street to give this port a proper table for supper and a proper room for cards, each run on its own footing. Guests are seated for dinner from half past five, and the hall opens for five hundred, euchre and rummy once the last plates are cleared, chips kept purely for the count. Nothing here is played online, no gaming machines stand in the building, and no wagering changes hands — everything is settled in person, at this address. We ask that a table for dinner and a place at the cards be booked as two separate reservations.

Our Beginning

Come In From the Wind

“Mind the door, the wind gets in” is the first thing most regulars hear at Sunset Jetty Rooms, and it has been said at this door since the rooms opened above the old grain agency on Dempster Street.

Esperance built itself on wheat and rock lobster, and the port still sets the rhythm of the town; we keep the same rhythm indoors, supper first, then cards.

We ask every guest for the same thing: patience with the wind, patience with the cards, and proof of being eighteen or over at the door.

Tea and a small jug of milk set on the hall's side table.
Supper First

Set the Table Before the Cards

Supper is served from half past five, a short list drawn from what comes off the boats and out of the wheatbelt around Esperance.

Nothing is battered or heavy; the kitchen keeps the plates simple enough to clear before the hall opens.

The dining room and the card hall are booked separately, and the kitchen closes well before the last hand is dealt.

Casino Hall: Five Tables Facing the Harbour Side

Five tables sit under the hall's high windows, each with its own dealer once the room fills after supper.

Five hundred opens the evening, euchre and rummy follow, canasta and bridge run in the quieter corners, and friendly poker with no buy-in closes most nights.

No machine stands anywhere in this building; every game here is dealt by hand, on felt, by a person.

The Dealers
Trained on every game the hall offers, rotating tables through the night.
The Felt
Refitted each year, kept flat and true for a fair deal.
The Chips
Worth nothing beyond the count; none of them leave the building.

House Terms

Keep These in Mind

  1. We ask every guest to be eighteen or over, without exception, and to carry proof if there is any doubt at the door on arrival.
  2. Chips issued in the hall exist only to keep the count of a game; they carry no cash value and are never exchanged for money at any table.
  3. Everything at Sunset Jetty Rooms happens in person at this address on Dempster Street; there is no online table, no app and no way to play from outside the building.
  4. A table for dinner and a place at the cards are two separate bookings, and we would rather guests ask for both than assume one covers the other.
